Client: Standard Life Investments
Service: New Shopfront Façade
Value: £3.4milion
Timescale: 22 weeks

Brief
As part of major refurbishment works to Churchill Square Shopping Centre on Western Road, Brighton, the client required the demolition of the existing concrete roof and installation of a new raised roof to allow extra height for the new double height glass façade shopfronts for Topshop Topman’s new flagship store, as well as BHS, Burtons, Dorothy Perkins and Calzedonia.

The client’s vision was to see the existing retail space transformed into an ultra-modern centre to significantly enhance the retail experience for its 13 million annual visitors.

Solution and Results
The project required the demolition of the entire concrete roof covering the 520,000 sq. ft. shopping centre and the installation of a taller steel frame to support the new roof and double-height glass along the entire 100-metre Western Road façade.

Close attention was paid to the deconstruction of the existing unit and the internal modifications, since all works were carried out within a live environment – both the shopping mall and pedestrian footpath.

The £3.4million contract was completed within just 22 weeks ready for handover for fit out.
These major refurbishment works marked the most significant facelift the shopping centre had seen since the 1990s.
